What Is Clarity in Business?
Having clarity in business means having a clear understanding. Whether it be your goals, objectives, and strategies. It also means being clear about your target market, value proposition, and competitive advantage.
Clarity is the foundation of every business. It answers the question WHY. Why did you start your business? Why do you want it to succeed? Once you understand your “why,” you can start or continue to build it in a way that supports your personal and professional goals. If you don’t have a clear why, it will be harder to distinguish whether you are running your own business or working for someone else.
Why Is Clarity Important in Business?
When I start working with clients, the first thing I want to understand is why they are in the business. I wanted to hear a personal reflection. They usually talk about it from a business perspective – they want to launch an X product, work with X brands, etc. But the place to start having clarity is to talk about your WHY from a personal perspective.
The way to be really clear on this is to map it out. What kind of life would you like to achieve from your business journey? These things are personal. Do you want a four-hour work week? Do you want to create a sustainable social enterprise? Do you want the means to travel the world with your family? Whatever it is, you have to be clear about it.
Else, you will build someone else’s business. It might be very successful and make a lot of money, but you are not doing it for you. Once you have mapped out your why, you will have some really good guidelines for how you should build or transform your business. These guidelines enable you to get what you want from your business journey. How? Usually, you have experiences wherein you have done things that worked or not worked out for you. And as part of the process, you would look at these experiences and apply them to your business. So, the business reflects you as a person. Your dreams, your direction, your decision-making. You are building your business and life by design.
How Can You Achieve Clarity in Business?
When I went into the business, I had this belief of going in, hustling through and going out with a lot of money. I was horrified when I learned that that wasn’t the case. It was actually tough to stay motivated and stay on track. You risk falling out of love with your business and being burned out.
And so, when I wanted to achieve the highest level of clarity, I turned to the absolute truth – business data.
Get Your Sanity and Stability in Business With Data
When you have people coming into you with all sorts of information, you need to know what you need to listen to. How do you know what is the truth and the best way to go about it? Use data and statistics.
In running a business, you might have five or ten or twenty people, and they all have this baggage, background, and history. No matter how you impose separating personal life from work, the truth is, it is difficult. We are not really good at separating reality. So, our personal lives definitely impact how we engage in our work. As a business owner, you have to get back some objectivity to know when you’re making the right decision. You get clarity when you use a data-based approach. Without data, you or your team might have a response on something and could send a whole chain of events – even if it is not necessary.
There is this saying, “To see is to believe.” And so by looking at the data, you can determine if something is an issue. As a result, you will not be spending time on things that don’t matter. That’s when you have clarity. If you have clarity, you have more sanity, which will go a long way. You will keep everyone calm and enable them to focus on what is essential.
Establish a Business Decision Framework
If you have been in business for a long time, you might have things come at you all at once. When opportunities are presented in every corner, you want to build a process to know what to say no to.
To have clarity, you want to create a framework or establish non-negotiables. These serve as your reference point when some things (good or bad) unexpectedly go your way.
Anytime opportunities present themselves, we often see them at face value. The money they could make, the businesses they could tie to, and the networks they would unlock. All sorts of great things. However, this approach lacks assessing opportunities on a personal level.
When you have clarity, you can develop the skill of saying no. Something may look “trendy” or impressive on paper, but if you are clear that it does not fit you, then it will not work. Your business needs to have a framework that determines what will get you there or what will lead to another path.
These frameworks are very important in terms of how you choose to run your business. For example, you may have non-negotiables such as:
a.) reaching a cash flow positive in six months,
b.) building a 12-month worth of operating expenses in business reserves,
c.) and not using debt when expanding. And so when an “opportunity” comes to you — like a mentor that helps create a new product — but you have not reached a cash flow positive, or it requires a loan, it is out of the window.
While assessing an opportunity from a financial perspective (e.g., where it puts in the market) is essential, it is even more important to assess if it will get you closer to the life you want. Having these non-negotiables will make it easier to make decisions about things that come your way, both personal and business-wise.
Stay Tight to Your Niche
As a business owner, the goal is always to grow the business. But how do you do it without spreading yourself too thin? One way is to stay tight to your niche.
A niche is a specific market segment that you can uniquely serve. When you focus on a niche, you can become the go-to expert in that area. This can give you a competitive advantage and help you attract more customers.
Stay Focused and Not Getting Distracted
You might have caught yourself stuck on a plateau. You have set some budgets and forecasts, but you are not hitting them. So you came up with expanding your business offerings. While this option is one of the most logical things to do, the tendency is it is often masking important issues in your business.
When it comes to clarity, it is important to be clear on what you’re trying to achieve and in what niche you are going to focus on. It really takes a lot longer to bring something new to the market. A lot of successful business owners have been around for 10, 20, or 30 years and they have done a lot of trial and error. It’s often not a very sexy business. Some sell only helmet clips, an app widget, or one type of liquor. But they are extremely specific features that fulfill extremely specific needs. And so, they have built a really large business around it. As the saying goes: “There’s riches in niches.”
Here Are a Few Things to Keep In Mind When Staying Tight to Your Niche:
- Be clear about your goals and objectives. What do you want to achieve with your business? Once you know your goals, you can start to develop a strategy for achieving them.
- Define your target market. Who are you selling to? What are their needs and wants? Once you understand your target market, you can tailor your products and services to meet their needs.
- Create a value proposition. What makes your business unique? What value do you offer to your customers? Your value proposition should be clear and concise, and it should highlight what makes you different from your competitors.
- Stay focused. It’s easy to get sidetracked by shiny new ideas. But if you want to succeed, you must stay focused on your niche. Don’t be afraid to say no to new opportunities that don’t align with your goals.
Benefits of Staying Tight to Your Niche:
- Increased profitability. Focusing on a niche can make you more efficient and productive. This can lead to increased profitability.
- Improved customer satisfaction. When you focus on a niche, you can better understand your customers’ needs and wants. This can lead to improved customer satisfaction.
- A more efficient and productive workforce. When your employees are focused on a specific niche, they can become more efficient and productive. This can free up time for them to focus on innovation and growth.
Some Challenges to Staying Tight to Your Niche:
If you’re new to a niche, breaking into the market and establishing yourself as an expert can be difficult. This is because you will compete with other businesses established in the market for longer and have a reputation for providing quality products or services.
If you’re not careful, you may turn business away from people outside your niche. These people may not be familiar with your brand or what you offer, and they may not be sure if you are the right person to help them with their needs.
To avoid these problems, it is important to research and carefully plan your entry into the market. Also, if you’re in a niche that requires specialized equipment or training, you may have to invest in these resources.
Additional Tips for Staying Tight to Your Niche:
- Do your research. Before you decide on a niche, make sure you do your research and understand the market. This will help you make sure that you’re choosing a viable niche that you can be successful in.
- Be passionate about your niche. If you’re not passionate about your niche, it will be difficult to stay motivated and focused. Choose a niche that you’re interested in and excited about.
- Network with other people in your niche. Networking with others in your niche can help you learn from their experiences and get advice. It can also help you build relationships with potential customers and partners.
- Stay up-to-date on trends. The market is constantly changing, so it’s important to stay up-to-date on trends in your niche. This will help you ensure that you’re offering products and services relevant to your target market.
