The ideal business model enables your ideal lifestyle and personal goals as a business owner. However, there is no blueprint for creating one as the ideal business differs from person to person. What’s ideal for me might not be ideal for you. It all boils down to each person’s unique motivations.

The question is if there’s no blueprint for it, how do you create an ideal business? The answer lies in the process of creating the foundations for the Ideal Business Model. This is done by creating the personal Ideal Scene.

What is the Ideal Scene?

Personal Ideal Scene →  Business Ideal Scene → Ideal Business Model

As seen in the formula above, to create your Ideal Business Model, first, you need to align it with both your Personal Ideal Scene and Business Ideal Scene.

The Ideal Scene is what you want to retain and what’s missing in your current lifestyle to be considered ideal.

Here’s a quick story of how we used the Personal Ideal Scene to achieve our Ideal Business Model.

When my wife and I started Resicert, we were not ready to start a business as we did before.

Why? We didn’t want to build a business that looked like someone else’s. It must be completely aligned to support our personal goals.

By experience, we knew it wouldn’t happen by accident. It has to be a core part of our strategy in growing the business.

So we created a very clear Personal Ideal Scene that provided the basis for the Business Ideal Scene. We also created a high-level set of non-negotiable givens which would never be compromised. We called them Core Policies.

How do you create your Ideal Scene?

There are steps you can follow to create an Ideal Scene. First, you need to look at your current scene and identify what you want to retain, what’s not ideal and how can you make it ideal, and what’s missing. Then, there are a set of rules you should follow to create an effective Ideal Scene. Read further to learn more about how you can implement each step.

First, look at your Current Scene.

There are only two scenes, the Current Scene and the Ideal Scene. To build your Ideal Business Model, you need to move from the Current Scene in a step by step process until the Ideal Scene becomes an everyday reality.

So the first important step is to look at your Current Scene. On a piece of paper or device, write the answers to the following questions.

What is good about your current scene that you want to retain?

When you answer this question, think of areas in your current scene that you wouldn’t want to change. They’re not just “okay”. They’re ideal. For example, your marriage or your relationship with your children.

What is not ideal about your current scene that needs to change?

Are there aspects in your life right now that are just “OK” but not ideal? If they were ideal, what would these aspects look like?

What is missing from your current scene?

Both questions  1 and 2 deal with things that already exist. This question is all about what’s missing. It’s a challenging question because it will require some deep thought and consideration.

But an example of things that could be missing from your current scene is children if you want children. Another thing that might be missing is being able to speak a language you’ve always wanted to learn.

This is where you dive deep and figure out what got lost along the way to building your business.

Follow a high-level approach to creating your Ideal Scene.

As you begin to write about how your Ideal Scene would look, follow these simple rules to write them with clarity.

Use specific numbered points.

Number your paper or document starting with number 1. Each numbered item represents a part of your ideal scene.

Write each scenario in past tense.

By writing in the past tense, you are writing about your ideal scene as if it has already happened.

Think about the perfect day in the future.

If it was a perfect and ideal day, all items on your ideal scene would be a reality.

Be specific with any items on your Ideal Scene.

When you’re specific about your Ideal Scene, it’s easier to see what’s needed to make it happen. It also lets you monitor your progress more effectively. Follow the steps below to make a detailed description of your Ideal Scene.

It should be clear when an item has been achieved.

It’s important that there’s 100% certainty when an item has been achieved. For example, the goal “have a happy marriage” is too vague. Thus, it’s difficult when it has been achieved.

You should be able to tick them off.

It should be easy to tick items off the list as you move from the Current Scene to your Ideal Scene. Do this until your Ideal Scene is indeed a reality. With the Resicert Ideal Scene which was written in 2011, I can now say 6 to 8 items on the list are now a reality.

Make Your Ideal Scene Measurable.

To make items 7 and 8 easier to execute, be specific with your Ideal Scene by adding metrics. You can also add what it means to you if you’ve achieved that scenario. What’s the main benefit? See the examples below.

Instead of saying:

“I have enough time to exercise regularly.”

Say:

“I am able to exercise at least 3 morning a week for at least 1 hour for each session enabling me to maintain a high level of fitness and vitality”.

As you can see, the first item was too vague and could not be measured. On the other hand, the second item specifies when and how frequently you will need to exercise. It also emphasized what exercising really meant for you.

Final Words

Creating your Ideal Business, a business that enables your personal goals, is never an accident. It is by design.

The only way to ensure that the business you’re currently building is aligned with your personal goals and ideal lifestyle, first you need to lay down the foundations by creating your ideal scene. To do this, you must follow these four steps:

  1. Look at your current scene.
  2. Identify what you consider ideal and want to retain.
  3. Identify what you consider NOT ideal, and reflect on how it would’ve looked like if it was ideal.
  4. Contemplate what’s missing in your current scene.
  5. Follow a set of rules to create a more effective ideal scene.
